Causes of Bacterial Vaginosis (Smelly Vagina)
Some bathroom toiletries contain particular chemicals and if in contact with the vulva it can wash away its natural oils leaving it dry and irritated and also prone to infection, such as a yeast infection. These chemicals can also spill into the urethra causing urinary tract infections upsetting the natural pH of the vagina which causes an overgrowth of harmful bacteria. Studies have shown that parasites such as some bacteria and yeast species emit characteristic odors due to their harmful activities. It is important to bear in mind that almost every offending smelly vagina is caused by infections.
Poor hygiene can also be one of the factors that upset the vaginal flora and lead to an infection. For this reason, it’s important to take good care of your vagina and the area around it. The vagina itself generally keeps itself clean with its discharge, so all you need to do is gently wash the labia and vulva regularly. You should use a gentle, unscented soap for this.
Studies suggest that women with multiple sex partners were more prevalent to acquiring Bacterial Vaginosis. Although it is not considered a sexually transmitted disease, BV is associated with having unprotected sex or having multiple sex partners. However, women who are not sexually active can also suffer from the same condition.
The Bacterial Vaginosis condition may cause additional complications such as infection of the uterus or the fallopian tubes. Treating the bacteria imbalance condition will lower the risk of further infections, treatment is especially important in pregnant women.
What is Bacterial Vaginosis (more commonly know as Smelly Vagina)
Bacterial vaginosis is a mild infection of the vagina caused by bacteria which can cause a smelly vagina. The normal condition is for the good bacteria and bad bacteria to be in balance, but if the there is a lack of good bacteria then the bad bacteria will thrive.
Many types of bacteria are normally found in the vaginal discharge of a healthy woman, the most important of which is the Lactobacilli. The vagina produces an acidic environment which allows optimum growth of the Lactobacilli bacterium. This acidic environment also discourages the growth of other bacteria and yeasts and thus helps protect against infections.
A healthy vagina will normally have a more acceptable salty odour whereas a vagina which has a bacteria imbalance altering the natural pH causes an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria, genital mycoplasmas, and gardnerella vaginalis. In this instance the Lactobacilli will be reduced or absent. A symptom of this bacterial vaginosis will include burning, a smelly vagina and excessive discharge. Bacterial vaginosis can also cause a lot of discomfort and embarrassment for a woman due to the pungent smell associated with this condition.
There are millions of women who suffer from this condition and it is one of the most common vaginal infections. At least 75% of women are plagued by some form of vaginal infections. A change in vaginal odor can be caused by a few different things, and understanding the cause is important to being able to eliminate the problem.
